Thoughts of You
This morning there were thoughts of you
in the crystals left on my lashes by the sand man
and woven through my hair as I lay on my pillow.
They were there in the mellow hours of the moon
playing behind my closed lids and pulling
at the corners of my mouth
There were thoughts of you last night too,
brushing softly across my lips
leaving the taste of memories on my tongue
and wrapping themselves around me
fighting off the cold winter ache
of being without you
They darted from the shadows of my mind
and danced across my fingertips
and I smoothed them over my skin in soft caresses,
held them gently against my heart,
and let them feel the beat their presence drew
from the depths of me
They wondered if I could remember
how long they had been with me
and I told them — forever,
then they asked me
when I would no longer need them
and I whispered —
never.
