Temperatures Rising
98.6 and inching higher
As a leap of faith
Taken before the moment could pass
Made my heart misfire
And pick up the beat realigned
To a different rhythm
98.7 and still rising,
Words ringing in my ears
Gripped my chest
And left me breathless,
My thoughts jumbled wordless in my head
And I could not hold back the tears
By 98.8 I had the shakes,
Tongue-tied and trembling,
Wound up like a spring too tight,
As I looked into your eyes
And you calmed me, pressed
Against your chest
As the fever spiked past 99.7
With it an ache and overwhelming thirst;
You lay with me for but a moment,
Rationed seconds for my tongue
And gave my parched lips a brief reprieve
Before you left me in the heat
99.10 … with no end in sight ...
100 degrees and melted in your hands
Lost — and found
In the depths of the bur n
Recast in a whole new mould
But not once looking back!
