Songbird
Off in the distance
I hear a songbird
singing unseen.
Soft and sweet the tune
that paints me tender hues
of beautiful.
Through cold and ice
it penetrates
and bathes my soul in warmth
akin to sinking tired bones
into a peaceful spa
and shutting out the world
with just a sigh.
It kisses me
with dreams that weave
soft threads of gossamer
and feathers
into an intricate design
of precious lace
to wrap around my shoulders
and ward off sorrows
In the distance
I hear a songbird singing
harmonies
in soft contralto
and I realize I cannot see it
because it dwells within me,
freed from its gilded cage
by love
and laughter
