Road to Nowhere

I travelled a long road to nowhere,
ending where it started,
and the tears rolled down my face
for everything, and nothing --
for what is, what was,
and what never can be;
for the loss of a girl
the follies of a boy,
and the missing of the arms
of a man

But you rode with me
if only in the strains of the melodies
drifting past my ears, singing:
I wouldn't wanna be me
if I didn't have you
as the strings of my heart
rolled out along the highway
with the line behind my tires

And somewhere along the way
summer took a detour
and left me to return without it
to find that everything was different
yet nothing had changed,
and more than ever
I am a woman in a shell
strong and fragile, simple and complex,
precariously balanced on a narrow beam of life
that shines through the clouds
from the hole where you reach
for my hand.
