Old Habits Die Hard

The sun sets and I linger
In the places you used to be
Even though I know
You won’t be there,
But familiarity breeds comfort
And I still feel your essence
Left over from times before.

The North Star has taken you
Under her spell
And your feet travel paths
Lit by her beacon
While I rest in the shadows
Drawing circles around old thoughts,
Making poetry
Out of the spaces between your lines
Where you laid out your heart
But didn’t know it.

Old habits die hard
And I find myself drawn
To the place I last felt you,
Where space is measured
In words, not miles,
And the lack of one
Overpowers the lack of the other
Until the end of your rainbow
Melts into the end of mine,
Somewhere,
In that pot of gold
