Masked

You wear the comedy half
Of the theatre masks
While the other hangs down your back,
At times, pulling at your neck,
But I
Have drawn my finger
Across your face
And felt the soft of your skin
Behind the mask

You walk facing the sun
To keep your shadows behind you
Where they can’t hurt you
And no one can see them,
But I
Have walked beside you
And felt them
With my arms wrapped around you,
And I embrace them

You have kept words
Like beans
Tethered in a leather bag
Collecting dust in the corner
But I
Have seen their magic
And felt their warmth
As they have spilled into your heart
Taken root, and grown.

I will kiss your face behind the mask
And lift the weight from around your neck
With my hands;
I will dance among your shadows
Arm in arm with you,
No matter which way the sun faces;
I will capture your words
Like fireflies in a jar
That you may see their beauty mixed
With your reflection

And I will Love you
For who you are
Because without you there is
Nothing
