Around The Moon

I passed you in the night
When the moon was hidden
Behind the shadow of the earth
And I did not see you there,
You went before me
And I felt your presence lingering
As I passed where you had been
Mere seconds before.

I waited there
In case you circled back
Though I knew you wouldn’t —
Perhaps twice, but not thrice
In one night —

And so I carved my initials in a heart
On the back of the moon
Where the moss does not grow
For the sun does not shine there,
And secrets are left to be found
Only by those who know they’re there

And I will return
While the New Moon still reigns
To see if you have carved your own initials
Beneath mine
While on your next flight
Around the moon
