Hole In My Heart

There is a hole in my heart.
It was a long time in the making,
Whittled away by harsh winds
Blown from atop the crumbling walls
I tried to erect around it.

From down below
Those walls began to look like a prison,
Casting gloomy shadows
Of a cold and dark forever.

But somewhere beyond the towering stone
And gnarled branches that crept
Above this suffocating place,
The sun began to shine.

It found the gaps between the trees
And the cracks among the rocks.
It didn’t listen to the wind.
It warmed the ground beneath my feet;
Wrapped me in its glow
And gently kissed my windblown face.

It meant to warm my days;
Help me cope against the weather,
And ease my pain,
But as it wrapped itself around my heart
It found that hole,
And softly slipped within.
And there it stayed.

There is a hole in my heart,
And I’m so glad it was there,
For with the warmth and comfort
Of your love that crept inside,
I can weather all the storms
The wind can bring.
