What Say You?
Where walls hold fast
and sentries stand like shadows
disguised as mimes
I walk the grassy shores
along a moat meant for keeping in,
not keeping out,
collecting pebbles along the path
— raw gems that fit in the palm of my hand
yet speak to me
when you least expect it,
and I keep them
tucked away in my pocket
where they grow smiles and sunshine
like a rose garden.
Harlequin plays the fool on stage
in a comedy performed for all to see,
and the mask fits well
but the eyes to the soul show through;
— it’s no fool
that stars in this pantomime
and Columbine reads the script
between the lines —
it’s a romance,
and the hero doesn’t need to be a king
or even a knight in shining armour,
he only has to move mountains
and melt icecaps,
and when they think they know
the most romantic leading man
let them name names
but the truth would surprise them
— the secret is safe with me.
