Cripple Creek

Up on Cripple Creek, she sends me
If I spring a leak, she mends me
I don't have to speak, as she defends me

~*~

We went up past Cripple Creek
and you sang a few lines
as we tried to pretend
the day wouldn’t end

The afternoon sun
filtered through the trees
where moss and leaves
cradled us in the heat
while water tumbled and skipped
as it chased itself over rocks,
playing a tune of its own
in the distance

You kissed me
and I wrapped myself
in the comfort of you,
and whispered
Can I stay here forever?
and even though we both knew
the day had ended
you answered Yes
and when we parted
I left a piece of my heart behind,
pressed against yours,
Forever
