A Little Box of Love

She prepared for him a box
all wrapped with pretty ribbon.
Her fingers lingered on it,
wishing she had more to give him.

Carefully she wrote the card
and thought about the contents,
just some books and trinkets
no wild and fancy presents.

Deep within her soul she longed
to give him so much more
but there was nothing she could offer,
she'd gone through this all before.

And so she had to settle
for the little things she'd bought
and waited patiently
to hear just what he thought.

When he opened it, she whispered
“I know it isn't much,
I wish I could have given you
more things for you to touch.”

He smiled, and said, “You did.
Eight million tons
of love were in that box
and I felt every one.”
