A Time
There was a time
when my life did not hold you
within the reach of its grasp,
when my eyes had not seen you
reflected in the summer winds;
my fingers had not touched
the beat of your heart
and felt it echoed in my own.
Your presence
had always lingered
on the edge of my horizons,
like my shadow,
always with me yet untouchable,
sensed, and yet undefined,
a taste upon my tongue
I had no name for.
Like the scent of rain
on the last days of a summer drought
bringing with it the promise
of new growth,
you wrapped around me
and filled the void
left by your absence
And I recognized you
as that part of me I had been missing
since last you had slipped through
my fingers
in a time long past
and unremembered
