Never Forget

They called it the Great War.
Great in the number of graves
of soldiers buried outside their homeland?
Great in the destruction of buildings
and entire ways of life
for civilians without a choice?
Great in memories wishing to be forgotten?

They called it the War To End All Wars,
yet it ended nothing.
Nothing but lives, and innocence, and futures.
Hundreds of thousands fallen,
never forgotten by those left behind,
yet never to be remembered
by the children that never were.

They call it Military Action,
and Peacekeeping.
Keeping the memories
of those now resting in peace?
We must never forget what so many wish
they did not have to remember,
for fear history becomes the future.
