Wishes On The Wind
Wish upon wishes, time after time
I traded my hopes for nickels and dimes.
Didn't understand it when they told me so —
know how to run, but know how to go slow.
Now I stare off down that rocky ol' road
what can I do to lighten my load?
I haven’t the courage to walk out this door
didn't think waking up could be such a chore.
Know how to run, but know how to go slow
then you’ll be sure of where you should go.
Against their advice, we all chose to run
the future was ours, so much to be done,
Wind at our backs and nary a care,
we learned as we went, no time to prepare.
Were the roads right or wrong, how could we know?
runnin' so fast; couldn’t see where to go.
Against father time, no one cuts you no slack,
the future caught up with us twenty miles back
Wind at the door, relentless and cold,
we thought we could fight it, the walls didn't hold.
Were we living in dreams; living free; living fast,
young and naive thinking all things would last;
And my wishes all wasted and ground into dust?
Strong lessons to learn, but learn them we must.
We must know how to run, but know how to go slow
were wise words of wisdom, that I now know.
Runnin' on empty, tired and distressed;
against the cold wall, my back is hard pressed.
The future won't wait 'til we make up our mind;
wind blows away wishes, time after time.
