Clara's Teddy Bear

When Clara was a little girl,
she saw him in the window
with eyes of black and scruffy fur,
Oh, how she loved that Teddy so.

But even at her tender age
she knew that times were tough,
still she hoped he might be hers
if she just wished enough.

She never spoke a word about
how she longed to have that bear
but deep in her brown eyes
it was clearly written there.

At Christmas time her parents
could not afford a present,
but despite this rueful hardship
the day was just as pleasant,

For Christmas morn upon their door
there came a gentle knock,
there sat that scruffy teddy bear
alone on their sidewalk..

From that day on he went with her
wherever she did go
wrapped up in her little arms,
Oh, how she loved that Teddy so!

When she became a mother
with a little girl of her own
she brought out that old bear,
and with love his rips were sewn.

His body filled with sawdust
was lumpy here and there,
but to Clara and her little girl
he was a precious teddy bear.

Through the years his scruffy fur
got matted and threadbare
and one day one of his eyes
sadly, was no longer there.

Then Clara kept her teddy
and put him safe away
until the day her grandchildren
would be old enough to play.

And now life’s gone full circle
Clara’s in the nursing home.
Now he’s back upon her bed again,
Oh, how she loved that Teddy so!
