September Rain
The heat of summer past,
days slide toward the equinox
in their quest for repose,
lingering between birthdays
in the dull September rain
before giving fanfare
in a splash of red, yellow
and orange,
as Maple, Birch, and Ash
burst forth their lollipop display
across the hills.
Birds school together
to chorus a fond farewell
accented by the call of geese
winging across the sky
heralding the summer’s end,
and Autumn kisses
September goodbye
on the wind.
