Picture Perfect

Pump yourself up
Fill your ego to the top,
Puff out your chest and crow;
Throw your punches below the belt
In four-letter streams,
Just don't get physical;
Pride yourself that you've never
Raised a hand in anger
While spewing the filth
You use to lift yourself up
Onto your pedestal;
Is the air a little thin up there?

Keep your head in the sand
Where you lost it
While burying the blame
That bears your name
After forcing everyone else's
Square pegs into round holes
In your mind
So you can prove to yourself
The shoe fits their foot,
And your hands are clean.

Keep her under the heel
Of your boot
Ground into the dirt,
Battered and beaten down,
Except with the bruises on the inside,
And when she's not as dumb
As you want her to believe
Reach inside your bag of tricks
There's got to be something there,
Turn up the volume,
Try a little harder
And make it sting

Ride the waves on a yo-yo
Making sure to snap the string
When least expected
Then tie it up and roll it out again
Never forgetting to forget
While living in the bliss created
By your own perceptions
Built on a play with blacked out lines
Where your parts were written
And reaction becomes
Persecution without cause
In your muddled brain

All the while making sure
It's all picture perfect
To the outside eye
