Christmas Surprise

All was silent on that winter night.
A hush had fallen with the new snow;
the moon was barely peeking through
the frosty lace painted on the window.

Sleep could not be coaxed or bribed
to make its home in little eyes this night
and so when all was dark and quiet
they tiptoed down the stairs by candle light.

Not a whisper passed between them,
not a sound from their feet as they crept,
just the pounding of their hearts anticipating
while above, their parents soundly slept.

A glimmer in the shadows caught their eyes
and they stopped and huddled close in awe
wide eyed underneath their nightcaps
they stood amazed at what they saw.

For, though Mom and Dad had told them
“there won’t be many Christmas gifts this year”
there were piles of presents underneath their tree
and they swore they’d seen a man in red just disappear.
