Waking up Mary

She wakes up every morning
and puts on her shoes to walk 
another mile in the life
she's expected to lead, 
and sighs.  

Yesterday was June Cleaver;
the day before that, Edith Bunker.
Today it’s Marion Cunningham. 
Maybe tomorrow it will be
Laura Petrie,  or Carol Brady 
.... or Alice. 

Just once, she’d like to wake up
as Mary Richards.
