The Leprechaun and Me

One day as I am walking
underneath the trees,
I spy a flighty leprechaun
just before he flees.

As I try to catch him
I fall flat on my face
and then I hear him laughing
from some nearby place.

"you will never catch me"
is the thing that I am told,
"You'll never get your greedy hands
on my pot of gold."

I tell him "Don't you worry,
I would never take your treasures
for to look up at the painted sky
is one of my great pleasures."

"But without your special pot
and the magic of its glow
there would be something missing
from the beautiful rainbow."

I assure him I'm just curious
to see if he is real,
and maybe if he shows himself
we could make a deal.

Then carefully his tiny hat
pokes up above the grass;
he looks at me with squinted eyes,
and says "What do you want then Lass?"

With a smile I say the only thing
I'd ask him to hand over,
just to help my wish come true,
would be a four leaf clover.
