Knitting
Mary sits
in a chair by the window.
She knits in multicoloured memories
purling the bad into the good
to hide it
in a finished masterpiece
with fringed edge,
then wraps it around her neck
and calls it
life.
When the time is right
she’ll knit the sequel,
for now,
it keeps her warm.

The Sequel
Mary no longer knits
in the chair by the window.
Her life’s work
has slipped from her grasp
and lays wilted
on the floor,
soaked
with her children's tears
but the sun’s golden rays
shine around her
and she picks up her needles
and starts to knit
from the
beginning
