Portrait of a Day

A west wind toys with the treetops
Like a dreamer lazily drawing fingers
Through otherwise calm water
While below, the sun experiments
With different shades of gray
Stippled on a canvas of green,
Caring-not that birds and butterflies
Disturb the scene before the paint dries.

In time, Zephyros will tire of this game
And either unleash a fit of temper
Like a spoiled child,
Or slide away to caper through
The valley between the hills
Where wildflowers grow,
And Sol will pack up his paints
To wander off in search of new lands,
New days, and new colours to dream in.

And then the world will wrap itself
In softly feathered dreams,
Drifting on the scent of sweet grasses
To the serenade of crickets
And field sparrows
While the day birds rest and wait
To take their cue from the eastern sky
For the Dawn Chorus to begin.
