Meticulously she washes her life
and hangs the pieces out to dry
side by side upon the line
rain or shine.
Some pieces are bright white,
she smooths them gently with her hands,
others, quite grey and dingy,
and some still bear unsightly stains.
But still she hangs them,
and she doesn't mind the rain.
It washes away the tears
that linger on a few grey pieces.
Then she steps back
surveys her handiwork, and waits.
Some days the drying takes forever
under clouded skies,
But some, the sun shines bright
with a warmth so soothing,
it makes the white seem even brighter
and it's worth the wait.
