Outdoor Adventure

The sky is dusted with starlight
a million miles away and more,
and a cluster of six tiny eyes
look up in awe from the canvass door.

Out to the wilderness they’d trekked
when the sun was still up in the sky,
but now the dark has settled in
the moon is king on throne up high.

The air is still, the crickets chirp,
adventure rules the night tonight;
inside the tent a flashlight beam
glows yellow gold to ward off fright.

They're huddled in their tiny tent
from where the shadows magnify
into some great wild animal
prowling through the trees nearby,

And as the sound grows ever near
a hush falls over each small child
as they prepare to run, to scream,
away from danger in the wild.

Alas, they finally spot their foe
with swish of tail and faint meow,
it’s Jasper in the cabbage patch,
out for his nightly tomcat prowl!

Although they feel so far from home,
their Mom and Dad are standing guard,
to watch this great outdoor adventure
— out camping in their own back yard
